Today’s decision a direct threat to existing LGBTQ+ Rights
(Phoenix, AZ. June 24th, 2022) - ONE Community and Equality Arizona have released the following statement on today’s Supreme Court Decision to overturn Roe V. Wade.
“Today’s Supreme Court decision is a direct attack on women and birthing people in our nation, and a direct threat to existing LGBTQ+ rights. The Decision creates dangerous precedent to allow the Court to strike down key decisions on LGBTQ+ equality in the future.
In his concurring opinion, Justice Thomas explicitly calls for reconsideration of landmark cases that protect same sex marriage, same sex acts, and contraception:
“For that reason, in future cases, we should reconsider all of the Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell.”
This dangerous sentence threatens fundamental rights, which is why Congress must act now to codify these protections into law before they are lost.
We urge Congress to utilize the bipartisan Equality and Fairness for all Americans framework to secure the votes needed to bring federal protections to LGBTQ+ Americans in employment, housing, public accommodations and more.
This framework will also codify the Obergefell decision, which brought marriage equality to the United States, and repeal the Defense of Marriage Act.
Our leaders must act. Time is of the essence for LGBTQ+ Americans.”
