September is Voter Registration Month for Equality Arizona!

Get the run down of our community events and volunteer opportunities coming up next month

With just over a month left before ballots are mailed and early voting begins for the 2022 midterms, eligible voters in Arizona will need to be registered and up to date by October 11 in order to participate in this year’s general election. So, for the month of September, we’re concentrating our organizing efforts on voter registration. Alongside our monthly Spectrum Academy and Queer People Fit events, we’re planning six different volunteer days at community colleges and universities across Maricopa County, and two voter registration bar crawls. On a national scale, Arizona ranks second highest among states where young voters can have the greatest impact in 2022’s senatorial and gubernatorial races (according to a report from Tufts University). It’s on us to make sure Arizona’s newest generation of voters are registered and ready to vote for the midterm elections. We have until October 11 to make sure eligible voters in Arizona are registered and up to date, so we need volunteers to help us sign up new voters at colleges and universities across Maricopa County.

Vampire Voter Registration Bar Crawl

Creatures of the night, rise up! And join our bar crawl on September 3 to register voters in downtown Phoenix. We’ll start the night at Arizona Wilderness with a brief introduction and training session, and then head out to register voters at bars along Roosevelt and 7th Street. Democracy depends on active participation, and we have until October 11 to make sure eligible voters in Arizona are registered and up to date. We’re planning to register 100 voters at this event, so if you’re motivated to make a difference this election, and looking for a challenge you can really sink your teeth into, there’s no better place to be.

Queer People Fit was created in response to the wave of exclusionary anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and discrimination sweeping the nation this year, and is designed to create a safe space for LGBTQ+ community members and allies to move together to build the movement for equality.

Queer People Fit: Cycling

Queer People Fit cycling events our hosted in partnership with OutCyclists, an LGBTQ+ cycling club based in Phoenix, and Bike Saviours, a volunteer-run, non-profit bicycle repair shop located in Tempe. At 6:45 PM, we’ll meet at the Tempe Town Lake Marina Boat Launch to prep for a bike ride around the lake kicking off at 7:00 PM.

Queer People Fit: Running

Queer People Fit running events are hosted in partnership with FrontRunners and FrontWalkers Phoenix, a running and walking club for the LGBT+ community and allies. We’ll start out in the parking area outside Margaret T Hance Park at 67 W Culver St. Phoenix, AZ 85003 as our designated meetup spot at 5:30 PM. Then we'll head out for a run around Downtown PHX after a 10 to 15 minute introduction. Stick around after the event to get some dinner with the group!

Rainbow Voter Registration Bar Crawl

Somewhere over the rainbow… we’re registering voters! Join us on September 17 for a bar crawl to register voters in the Melrose District. We’ll start the night at Boycott Bar on Seventh Avenue with a brief introduction and training session, and then head out to sign up new voters! Democracy depends on active participation, and we have until October 11 to make sure eligible voters in Arizona are registered and up to date. Our goal for the event is to register 100 voters, and with your help, the dreams that we dare to dream really can come true.

Learning the Political System: the History of U.S. Citizenship

As part of our ongoing project of political education, we’ll be hosting a workshop exploring and explaining the history of citizenship in the United States. Join us at the Tempe Public Library to bond with community and to build your knowledge of the political system. If you were able to attend our previous installments, this will build on the concepts we covered so far, but all levels of knowledge are welcome and encouraged to sign up.

Spectrum Academy

Looking to take your activism to the next level? On August 27, from 11 am to 2 pm, join us at the Escalante Community Center in Tempe. Equality Arizona’s Spectrum Academy is our monthly member meeting, where LGBTQ+ community members and allies can come together to share their stories, learn from experts, and have critical discussions about the political landscape of our state. This month we’ll be joined by special guest speaker Ann Begay, the first Native American Justice of the Peace in Maricopa County.
