Thanks to everyone who attended our holiday party this week! We had a blast getting to know you, and we’re excited to work alongside you in the coming year. As embark on a new direction for 2023, we want to make it as easy as possible for you to get into the work of LGBTQ+ advocacy and politics, so we’ve formed three volunteer teams to match the three pillars of our work: civic advocacy, political power, and media & events.
Volunteer with Equality Arizona
Wherever decisions are being made in Arizona, it’s our job to make sure LGBTQ+ people are involved in that process. Get started by joining one of our new volunteer teams!
Civic Advocacy. The system doesn't work for everyone, but it’s not just broken — someone decided it should be that way. Be an advocate for more empathetic and intersectional decision making in your local government.
Political Power. The LGBTQ+ community is the fastest growing voting bloc nationwide. Use your power to create change in Arizona. On this team, you'll help to shape our voter guides and field strategy for campaigns and citizen initiatives.
Media & Events. This team is all about creating context. Join our team of citizen journalists to track and report on LGBTQ+ politics and culture change.
If you sign up to volunteer on our website, you’ll also gain access to our Discord!
Join Us for One of Our Last Few Events of 2022
The year isn’t over yet, and we’ve got some great events planned before the holiday break. Join us tomorrow afternoon to prep for the legislative session, or hang out with us next week at Brick Road Coffee for our banned book club or at South Mountain for an accessible hike. Keep reading to learn more!
Civic Advocacy Jam
12:30 pm - 2:00 pm December 17, 2022 | register
Join us on December 17 for our next Civic Advocacy Jam! The 2023 legislative session is just around the corner, so this is our time to plan and prepare as a community to meet the challenges and opportunities the coming year will bring. At Equality Arizona, we know that civic advocacy means a lot more than reacting to flashpoints, so we’ll be using these monthly jams to practice design thinking for policy. Bring your ideas, your frustrations, and a willingness to think creatively!
Location: Tempe Library Ironwood Classroom
Banned Book Club
6:30 pm - 8:00 pm December 19, 2022 | register
As book bans sweep the nation, one great way to push back is to read! Our banned book of the month is Out of Darkness, by Ashley Hope Pérez, a novel centered on the New London School Explosion of 1937, that confronts difficult historical realities of racism and segregation. Join us at Brick Road coffee on November 21 to discuss the book and the backlash with our book club host Vanessa Marie!
Location: Brick Road Coffee, Tempe
Queer People Fit: South Mountain
5:30 pm - 7:30 pm December 20, 2022 | register
Move with us to build the movement for equality! Get your holiday sweaters on and join us for a walk along the accessible Judith Tunnell trail at South Mountain on Tuesday, December 20. The Queer People Fit series exists for LGBTQ+ people to come together to build community and to find a sense of belonging, and there’s no one right way to do that! So bring a thermos of tea, or an instant camera, or plug in your headphones and take the walk at your own pace.
