After our recent newsletter (embedded below) announcing our recommendations for the midterms, we got some feedback from people who were curious about our recommendation in Congressional District 5, where we chose an Independent candidate. In general, we chose to focus our recommendations on critical races where voters have a real and consequential choice. Unfortunately, that’s not true of every district — Congressional Districts 8 and 9 are two relevant examples — for a variety of reasons. In an ordinary election, the new Congressional District 5 would be one of those districts, and we would have declined to make a recommendation. The presence of a pro-LGBTQ+, pro-reproductive-freedom independent in the race changes that math, so we sat down with the candidate, Clint Smith, to ask him some important questions.
